Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup currants or raisins
  • 1/4 cup apricot jam (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Let sit until foamy (5-10 minutes).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, remaining sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and beaten eggs to the dry ingredients. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place in a greased bowl and cover with a towel; let rise in a warm spot for about an hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and shape into 12 equal buns; place in a greased baking dish.
  7. Cover again and let rise for another 30 minutes while preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Brush with warm apricot jam before serving.
